Car technology is all around us these days and you don't have to go far to see huge advancements and how widely these progressions are being used in today's eco-aware society. The most popular popular development in recent years, adopted by most new cars, is stop start technology
Basically start stop technology is when a car stops or becomes idle the system will shut itself off until the driver takes their foot off the brake. This stops the engine running momentarily so reduces fuel consumption and pollution. Start stop technology was designed to have two major benefits - to save on fuel and to limit the harmful gasses a car produces and emits into the atmosphere. Although this is great for the environment, it's not so efficient on the car's battery and will require a special start stop battery to operate at an optimal level.
Autospark recommends Exide's Range of batteries, designed to withstand the high under-bonnet temperatures and excessive vibration experienced by motorists. We have a full product range available, including automotive, marine, deep cycle and industrial batteries to provide customers with the best solution for every application.
Short distance driving can cause your car battery to flatten over time. This is because your battery doesn't have a chance to reach 'full' charge, which leads to accelerated corrosion and acid stratification. If you only use your car for short trips, long distance spins between them will help boost your battery's health. Bad habits, such as skipping periodic car maintenance and using too much energy when idling also shorten battery life expectancy.
Start stop technology cars start and stop much more frequently than regular cars and this puts pressure on the battery. A regular car battery, known as an LSI (lighting, starting, ignition) battery, was historically engineered to give a car a jolt to start a handful of times a day. However, the new start stop technology means that cars are stopping and starting much more frequently and this puts additional pressure and requirements onto the battery system.
Not only is the car battery required to use extra energy to stop and start much more often, it also needs to continue to feed all the other elements of the car like the air conditioning, lighting, radio etc. This all requires battery power, so with a start stop system it's no surprise that a powerful car battery is required.
ECM (Enhanced Cyclic Mat) batteries are also known as AFB (Advanced Flooded Batteries) or EFB (Enhanced Flooded Batteries) were the first introductory battery to meet the new start stop battery technology requirements. Essentially these batteries have evolved from the traditional lead-acid battery but includes extra capabilities such as:
Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) batteries are also lead-acid based but are much more advanced than their ECM counterparts. Their technology enables the acid to be absorbed into a fiberglass material, rather than flow freely as a liquid. The main benefits of an AGM start stop battery are:
Whilst ECM (Enhanced Cyclic Mat) batteries can be replaced with an AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) battery the same cannot be said about the reverse. An AGM battery should only ever use AGM technology. And standard LSI (lighting, starting, ignition) batteries should never be considered for cars sporting start stop technology. Always check with the car manufacturer for instructions or ask your auto electrician for advice on which car battery to select.
While the majority of regular LSI batteries are generally guaranteed to last around four years, they can in fact go on to last up to six or seven years. Cars with start stop technology require a much higher output from their start stop battery so you might find they don't last quite as long as their traditional counterparts.
The simple answer here is no. The cars that use the start stop technology don't use starter motors in the traditional sense. In fact they combine a number of technologies so not to put strain on the starter motor. Some cars that have implemented start sttop technology do not even use a starter motor, eliminating concerns of starter motor wear and tear.
